Bato dela Rosa's son to follow in his father's footsteps

2 May, 2017
Bato dela Rosa's son to follow in his father's footsteps

"Bato" dela Rosa's son, Rock dela Rosa has recently enrolled in the PNPA, and his father could not be more proud of the young Rock.

35 years ago, a young Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa enrolled in the PNPA. Now, it’s his son, Rock dela Rosa’s turn to enroll in the PNPA and hopefully become one of the country’s finest policemen someday.

No special treatment for the younger dela Rosa

On May 1st, 350 new recruits of the PNPA were welcomed to start their cadetship in Camp Castañeda in Silang, Cavite.

As the cadets marched into the open field, their relatives and friends cheered them on to show support. However, their celebration didn’t last long, as the upperclassmen quickly ran towards the cadets and started to yell at them.

Some upperclassmen told the new recruits to do push-ups until their arms gave out, while others were asked to do body rolls on the ground. Some did jumping jacks, while others did sit-ups. Each cadet had to go through 8 stations, representing each PNPA company.

Unsurprisingly, there was no special treatment for the younger dela Rosa. The only son of the country’s top cop had to go through the same rites as the other cadets, and the would-be policemen had the chance to shout and order around Rock dela Rosa.

His father did not attend the rites

While Rock’s sister and mother were there to attend the reception rites, surprisingly, his father was nowhere to be found.

“Takot ako baka mas lalo siyang pahirapan ng mga upper class na kadete pag andon ako… baka ma-challenge sila, pakita na talagang they are over and above the plebe who is my son. So ganon ‘yun, ganon ‘yung attitude ng kadete so iwas nalang ako baka mamaya mas lalong mamalasin ang anak ko,” Bato shared with reporters after.

He added that he would have wanted to have been there to see his son off to school.

He adds, “Every significant event na mangyari sa buhay na anak mo, gusto mo talaga bilang tatay na andon ka… dapat nandoon ako pero pinigilan ko talaga dahil alam mo na.”

“I wish him good luck. Proud ako”

Regardless, the proud father can’t help but share his apprehensions towards his son’s enrollment in the PNPA.

He shares, “Kinakabahan kung kakayanin ba niya. I wish him good luck. Proud ako. Pero bilang ama, kinakabahan din. Makakaya ba niya training? Physically alam ko kayang kaya niya…malakas yun eh. Pero yung psychological, I don’t know. Iba siya. Iba ako.”

“Ako, anak ako ng tricycle driver kaya no retreat, no surrender ako. Papasok ako doon – kahit na babagsakan mo ako ng shot put sa tiyan ko, hindi ako uuwi ng Davao. Pero siya, anak siya ng chief PNP kaya iba na rin ‘yung psychological kuwan niya. Medyo kuwan lang ako, apprehensive, but anyway, pabayaan ko siya kung ano gusto niya sa buhay.”

However, the younger dela Rosa was quick to assure his father that he was up to the task, and he insists that his decision to become a policeman wasn’t influenced by his father.

(I am not doing this for him, but for my love for my family, the PNP, my fellow Filipino people and the President).”
