It is that time in your life when you’re all excited to bring a new soul into this world. That tingling sensation you get when you anticipate the birth of your child and hear the first heartbeat inside you is an incomparable emotion.

However, amidst all the joy and excitement, you may tend to forget about your hospital expenses and overall pregnancy costs. If you don’t plan in advance, you may end up spending most of your savings on delivery costs and any sudden health-related issues.

This is where a maternity insurance policy comes in.

What is Maternity Insurance?

Maternity insurance covers most of a mother’s pre-and post-natal expenses. This includes any sudden accidents, unforeseen pregnancy, and childbirth complications, as well as other related issues. Maternity insurance also covers the newborn child.

If there are pregnancy and birth complications, maternity insurance will pay out a lump sum called sum assured. How much is paid out depends on the amount of the policy taken, the kind of complication faced, and the length of hospital stay.

Why do you need Maternity Insurance?

Maternity insurance is a good financial protection for the mother and the baby. This provides you with security when unforeseen events like an emergency caesarean delivery or birth complications happen. When you have maternity insurance, you can be assured that you and your baby will still have the best care whatever happens.

If you’re just planning to have a baby, consider getting maternity insurance now as there is usually a waiting period before the benefits can be claimed.

How to Choose the Best Maternity Insurance in the Philippines

You can find plenty of insurance policies in the market but how do you choose the best one from the rest? In the Philippines, there are currently no standalone maternity insurance plans, only health insurance policies with included maternity benefits.

When consulting insurance advisors, it would help if you ask them about the following criteria:

Span of coverage.

Aside from the overall scope of the health insurance policy, zero in on their maternity benefits like pre-and post-natal care, number of pregnancy and birth complications, as well as congenital anomalies covered.

Sum assured.

Consider the hospital where you plan on giving birth. Ensure that the sum assured covers any possible type of delivery you will have, and will cover the cost of possible complications. This way, dipping on your savings when the need arises will be one less thing to worry about.

Assisted pregnancies.

While you may still be in the pink of health today, there is no telling how long it may take for you to conceive. It won’t hurt to ask if the policy covers assisted pregnancy methods such as in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Additional benefits.

Make the most out of your insurance policy and check what additional benefits you can claim. Many insurers make their plans stand out by offering extra perks like daily cash incentives during your hospital stay, or allowance for prenatal vitamins and supplements.

Budget.

Set a budget and make a list of priorities on what you want for your plan. This will help you be strategic and practical in choosing a policy you can commit to. Remember that having maternity insurance should provide you with peace of mind, no additional burden.

Exclusions.

We did the research for you and have come up with a shortlist of best  insurance policies with maternity benefits in the Philippines.
