Can I Use a Massage Chair During Pregnancy?

Your body is aching and you just want a massage, but is it okay for a pregnant woman to use an electronic massage chair? Read to find out.

Is it safe to use massage chair during pregnancy?

As happy as you are with your pregnancy, there’s no denying the toll it’s taking on you physically. Your whole body hurts and all you want is a massage to massage all the soreness away. Lo and behold, you come across a massage chair set up in the mall or you have one of your own at home.

But is it safe for you? No one knows enough about the effects of an electronic massage chair on a pregnant woman or her unborn child. Some say that them is fine, but others say that the vibrations that the chair emits might affect the baby. Many massage chairs, in fact, bear warning signs that they are not to be used by pregnant women. If you just have to have your massage, though, do make an appointment with a massage therapist instead. There are therapists who specialize in prenatal massage.

Alternatively, you may also use a small handheld massager around your neck and upper back area. Avoid massaging your lower back and stomach area to avoid stimulating the uterus. Since the effects of massage chairs on pregnant women are still unknown, it is better to err on the side of caution. Try to avoid using massage chairs until after giving birth or until you get your doctor’s go-signal.
