4.7 Magnitude earthquake rocks Davao city, causes concern about the 'Big One'

The recent Davao earthquake that has injured 2 people has raised concerns among Filipinos about the "Big One" that could strike at any time.

A 4.7 Magnitude earthquake has shook Davao City, which sadly caused a waiting shed to topple and injure 2 women.

A video of the incident was posted on social media

The incident was recorded and posted on social media which showed an American national helping out one of the injured women right before they were assisted by a team of paramedics from Rescue 911.

In the video, students can also be seen near the area where the waiting shed toppled.

According to reports, the quake struck at around 9:50 AM, and it was a 4.7 magnitude earthquake. Additionally, a magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck Montevista, Compostela Valley at around the same time.

A number of netizens have also attributed recent sightings of oarfish, large deep-sea creatures which have been reported to predict earthquakes, as a sign that the “Big One” might happen soon.

Recent earthquakes have raised concerns about the “Big One”

In the wake of the recent Davao earthquake, as well as the magnitude 6.7 earthquake that hit Surigao, Phivolcs has warned the general public to be prepared in case the “Big One” happens.

In this case, the “Big One” is a long overdue and massive earthquake that can occur anywhere along the West Valley fault, which can affect over 57 subdivisions located in Bulacan, Rizal, Metro Manila, Cavite and Laguna.

They warn that the massive earthquake can possibly happen within our lifetime, and that it could cause massive devastation. That is why Phivolcs urges citizens who live near the fault to always be prepared just in case it happens.

  1. Keep yourself informed about what’s happening at all times. Always keep yourself up-to-date with the news so that you can prepare in advance should a disaster strike.
  2. Make sure to know important numbers to call. Always keep the phone numbers for emergency services ready, so that in case a disaster happens, you know who to call.
  3. Get familiar with safe places in your neighborhood as well as places where you can evacuate to. So that you can know the safe places where you can immediately go to in case you need to leave your home.
  4. Always have a survival kit, or survival bag ready in case anything happens. Being prepared means having a survival kit that has essentials such as canned food, medicine, and a fully stocked first aid kit. It’s also good to have batteries, a portable radio, and an extra cellphone that you can use in case of emergencies.
  5. Teach your kids about what they should do if disaster strikes and you’re not with them. It’s very important to teach your kids about how to keep themselves safe in case a disaster happens while they’re outside, or if they’re in school and you’re not around.
