What you missed: Half of the Great Barrier Reef has died and other news

Catch up on the latest breaking, trending, world news here

The steady rise of Global temperature has caused a severe spike in Ocean temperatures. Bearing the brunt of these marine changes are corals such as the Great Barrier Reef.

Sadly, over 90% of the Reef has been declared ‘dead’ due to severe coral bleaching, according to a study by ARC Coral Reef Studies.

For years, the effects of global warming have negatively affected the Reef  but due to this current El Nino phenomenon, its taken a huge tool on marine life not just in Australia but all over the world.

Scientists are uncertain how the Reef will recover.

The once majestic reef is so vast that it is one of the only parts of earth clearly visible from space.

Only 7% of the Reef has managed to escape bleaching and scientists are rallying people to do whatever we can to save the reef.

Professor Terry Hughes from the National Coral Bleaching Taskforce told the BBC:

“I’m inherently an optimist, but I think we have a rapidly narrowing window of opportunity to save the Great Barrier Reef. If we don’t take action on global warming it will become more degraded.”
