Iconic fashion designer Kate Spade commits suicide

On June 5 2018, the 55-year-old fashion designer famous for her colorful bags, was found dead in her New York apartment.

Popular designer Kate Spade was found dead in her Park Avenue apartment in New York apartment on Tuesday June 5 2018.

Kate Spade Suicide By Hanging

Police are investigating the 55-year-old’s death as a suicide, reports the BBC. The designer’s body was found by her housekeeper and there had also been a note. The exact contents of the note are yet unknown, however, it is believed there was a message to her daughter included in it.

CNBC reports that Spade had hanged herself. New reports just come in mention that the designer possibly had relationship problems, which may hint at why she took her life. Her husband was supposedly in the apartment when she committed suicide.

Spade was a co-founder of the designer label Kate Spade New York, which she later sold in 2007 so she could focus on raising her daughter. Her label was bought last year by New York designer rival Coach.

In 2016, Spade and her husband Andy launched another design label for handbags and shoes — Frances Valentine — named after their daughter who is now 13 years old.

Kate Spade New York Plans to Donate 1 Million Dollars For Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Awareness

Because of the tragic passing of the global brand’s founder, the Kate Spade New York Foundation has announced that they will be making charitable donation to various suicide prevention and mental health awareness causes. They will be starting with a donation to the Crisis Text Line. They also plan to host a global mental health awareness day for their employees.

“Kate Spade was a true fashion icon who brought joy to the lives of women around the world, and inspired women to live life to the fullest.  We are dedicated to carrying on her legacy,” shares Anna Bakst, Brand President and Chief Executive Officer of Kate SpadeNew York. “The outpouring of love on social media and in our shops from customers of all ages has been overwhelming and moving. It is such a beautiful reflection of how much Kate was loved.”

Popular in the Philippines

Here in the Philippines, the fashion designer was well-loved for her brightly coloured handbags and accessories.

Among Pinay moms however, it is Kate Spade’s “Stevie” diaper bag that is best known, and in fact is among the most popular diaper bags around.

Here at theAsianparent, we extend our heartfelt sympathies to Ms. Spade’s family. Her tragic death is a reminder to us all that we never truly know the burden or pain another person might be carrying.
