Senator Joker Arroyo was one of the most respected figures to ever grace Philippine politics.

But beyond the admired public persona, he was a simple man who led by example. His passing is truly one to be mourned.

His popular motto, "Pag bad ka, lagot ka!" really captured his love for justice.

He always stood up for what he believed was right, bravely challenging Martial Law.

Dubbed the "People's Dragon", he was beloved for being an advocate of human rights.

When the wife of one of his closest friends, Atty. Rene Saguisag, was diagnosed with cancer and later passed on, he gave his help and financial support to their family without hesitation.

When Atty. Saguisag's son got married, he served as a sponsor. Though they had their disagreements, their respect for each other remained.

He was also a caring and supportive father to his three daughters, all of whom have found success and have made their marks in their respective fields.

His eldest daughter, Maoi, is the CEO of the Philippines' first Biotechnology Consulting firm. Baba Arroyo, his second daughter, is an entrepreneur, artist, and pastry chef. His youngest daughter, who is also named Joker, is a champion equestrian who graduated from Yale University.

When he served as part of the counsel of the late President Corazon Aquino, his presence and guidance helped influence positive change.

Later on, he was fondly called "Little President" because of his vital role during Aquino's term.

Stay humble

During his time as Senator, he was said to be the most frugal.

When his constituents were dodging rumours about corruption, he was busy earning the nickname the "Scrooge of Congress" for being thrifty and vigilant about spending taxpayer's money wisely.

He is one of the few, if not the only senator, who did not collect the controversial Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF).

Public figures to look up to are a rarity. That's why Senator Joker Arroyo will truly be missed.
