7 Myths and facts about early labor

For first-time moms, labor can be a confusing topic, especially since every mother's experience with labor is different. So we're here to help you out!

If you’re a first-time mom, labor can be pretty confusing, especially since you sometimes hear conflicting information from other mothers.

While some moms say that labor for them was a breeze, other moms say that labor for them was a painful and terrible experience.

That’s why we’re here to help clear the air and let you know about the different myths and facts about early labor.

1. Myth: At the first sign of labor, you need to rush to the hospital

While there’s nothing wrong with going to the hospital if you feel any signs of labor, another option would be to just call your doctor and ask them if you need to rush to the hospital. Your doctor should be able to advise you if you need to go now, or if you can wait a bit longer.

2. Fact: You may urinate or excrete during labor

It sounds gross, but it’s true, and it’s a pretty common occurrence. So don’t feel too embarrassed about it. Your doctor has probably seen it hundreds of times before!

3. Myth: Contractions are very painful

This one’s not always true. Sometimes contractions aren’t as painful as you might think. And when it comes to knowing if you’re about to give birth, the frequency of contractions rather than the pain should be observed.

4. Truth: Contractions are the most important sign of labor

Contractions should always be taken seriously. In some cases, patients might think that they’re experiencing Braxton-Hicks contractions or contractions that happen before labor, but in reality, they might be more serious contractions.

5. Myth: Epidurals hurt!

Epidurals can be uncomfortable, but compared to the pain of labor, they don’t hurt as much. For the most part, epidurals feel like a bee sting. A bit painful, but tolerable.

6. Truth: Drink lots of water

During labor, it’s important for you to always be hydrated. So make sure you grab a glass of water or drink some liquids every time you can.

7. Myth: Contractions tell you if you’re in labor

Contractions can be a sign of labor, but it’s not the only sign. Sometimes, women go into labor without even undergoing any contractions.
