Find out why this photo of a police officer playing with a toddler goes viral

Find out why this photo of a police officer playing with a toddler goes viral

“He was laying there comforting him. If he were to get up the child would cry.”

In the dead of the winter the city of Cincinnati, Ohio experiences on average a temperature of −0.7 °C and receives two to five inches of snow daily. It is a time of the year when you and your family would rather stay inside the house and sit beside a warm fire.

But that was not the home situation for this two-year-old boy. Instead of staying indoor, he slipped out of the house and wandered the frigid city streets of Cincinnati.

That was how the police officers found the toddler, cold and ill-dressed for the weather. The officers then took the child and brought him to the station to file for an official report.

The officers found the toddler after a 911 call had been placed reporting a child wandering the streets alone.

An officer, Jamie Landrum responded to the call, and when she saw that the bow wasn’t dressed properly, bought him clothes and diaper. At the station, another officer, Will Nastor, tried to get the boy to take a nap.

“It was quite obvious that [the boy] was cranky and was in need of a nap,” Sergeant Daniel Hils told reporters. “He did not want to be left alone so Officer Nastold willingly laid down on the carpet and was trying to get him to nap. [I was] extremely proud of him. Here’s a guy that’s got his bulletproof vest and his gear [on] and is doing all he can.”

Hils, president of the Fraternal Order of Police #69, snapped a photo of the pair, and uploaded it on Facebook, where it racked up over 5,000 likes.

“He was laying there comforting him,” Hils said. “If he were to get up the child would cry. I was equally proud of Jamie.”

The police also revealed that the child’s mother was charged with negligence and child endangerment, and was taken to jail. The social services placed the child in the meantime with a relative.
