To all our Special Children:
We your parents wanted to write you a letter because of all that has been in the news recently.
For whatever reason, you were given to us to guide and love. And that we do wholeheartedly; we love you so much! We also know, being your parents that have had more experience with this world than you, that this will not be a small undertaking.
Some things may be difficult because you’re special
Your being special to us may be uncomfortable to others. This is because they may not really understand that your body parts or your mind does not quite work the same as theirs. Maybe because they don’t understand, it makes them scared. It may be so uncomfortable to them to even just see you or be around you that they may do and say things that hurt. Know that these things hurt us more than you because we love you so much for all who you are and not just because you are special. We know that because you’re special, that things may be a little bit different, a little more difficult for you. It will be inevitable that people outside our family may not understand you, but know that we will protect you always. As much as we know that you will most likely take this in stride more than we will, because you may not know any different, we want only what is best for you, as any parent would.
It may be challenging for us, but we have each other.
Because of the way most of you will handle this, we know we are the ones that learn more from you than you will ever do from us. We will learn from you about patience, tolerance, kindness and love. We will always be grateful for these lessons.
Family first, always
As it happens in most families, we will both push each other’s buttons and we will have disagreements, but these are all because we are trying to adjust with each other.
At the end of it all, it will always be us, and we will always be family. That above all is the most important thing we need to remember in those trying times we may face. We should always remember that though there may be these times, we will always face them together.
You will never be alone. We promise.
This is why we are writing you this open letter. We know how special you children are, especially to us! Remember we are always here for each other. We love you and we know you are more than what makes you, different or special. We are here to love and guide you, and be your first line of defense to the world.
For now, keep just being you and let us learn from each other. Hopefully others can learn from you too. We hope that others who many not understand you, will try. In doing so, we hope they will have a better understanding of the things you (and we) have to face, and be more open to what you are going through, instead of lashing out. Just because you are different, does not mean you are any less loveable. You will always be our special children and we love you, for always!
