Keeping your teenager safe
Parents worry a lot about their children, most especially if they’re teenagers since teens tend to want more independence, and go out with their friends more often. While it’s important to let your teen experience independence, it’s just as important for them to be safe.
Here are some tips to always keep in mind when it comes to the safety of your teen:
- Always know where they are. Whenever your teen goes out with friends, make it a point to know where they’re going and ask them when they would get back home. They might feel that you’re being annoying, but it’s important for you to always know where they are, so you know what to do in case of an emergency.
- Teach them to avoid places they’re not familiar with, especially with unknown people. Being a teen means going on adventures, and meeting a lot of people. However, it’s important for your teen to know when someone is not a safe person to be with.
- Make sure that they have a means to contact you in case of an emergency. Nowadays, almost all teens have a cellphone, so it’s best to use it to keep in contact with your teen so that you can check up on them when they’re out of the house.
- Know the people that they’re with. As a parent, it’s your responsibility to know who your child’s friends are. That’s why it’s very important for you to get to know their friends better so that you can get a gauge for what kind of people your teen is friends with.
- Build trust with your teen. Of all things, trust is very important to build with your teen. Having mutual trust between you and your child helps keep them safe since they won’t have to make excuses whenever they go out, and they’ll feel safe that their parent is looking out for their safety.
