A review on The Pilates Place

What is Pilates and why was it started?

The latest form of exercise hitting our little island is Pilates. Often confused with yoga, Pilates stands its ground and has actually been around for a number of years. It was actually developed in Germany, in the 20th Century by Joseph Pilates. Eager to find out more, we spoke to Ms. Jacqueline Lee, who runs The Pilates Place with Ms. Jackie Lim.

Pilates is a form of exercise that teaches balance and control of the mind and the body. The routine aims to build flexibility, strength, endurance, and coordination without adding muscle bulk

Joseph Pilates was weak as a kid. But with the mindset to build his body, he took up various forms of exercises. A believer that there is a link between physical and mental health, Joseph Pilates came up with a programme that contains concentration, control, breathing, and flowing movements.

What are the advantages of doing Pilates?

Your back and abdominal muscles are strengthened.

You become more flexible

Your posture and balance improve.

The body workout is small but it strengthens your whole body.

Create a stronger, more flexible spine.

Increase joint range of motion.

Improve circulation.

Heighten neuromuscular coordination.

The Pilates Place

Located at 60 Tras Street, The Pilates Place was started in September 2008 but already has a considerable number of following not just to its ideal location for workaholics but also because of the wonderful ambience that exuberates. Committed instructors with years of experience behind them are sure to provide any beginner the comfort he/she needs.

Is Pilates suitable for pregnant women?

Definitely. Because of the toned down movements, it serves ideal for pregnant mothers. As pregnant moms constantly suffer from back and joint pains, Pilates will ease up the pain and provide relief. It can also help in a safer and faster delivery! If you don’t want shuffle down in your pregnancy state, not to worry. Pilates can be done at home on a small mat with pillows or cushions to support your head. Pre and post natal periods are welcomed as Pilates will also activate the pelvic floor muscles and keep these muscles strong for the delivery.

Old injury getting to you?

That knee you injured during your softball days in school will definitely hurt off and on. Ms. Lee ensures that Pilates can get rid of any old injuries and leave the sufferer feeling ‘brand new’ again!

How popular is it here?

The benefits are seen so widely that even certain schools are introducing Pilates as a form of CCA! There is no maximum age and Ms. Lee even has an 87 year old Pilates enthusiast at The Pilates Place!

Shy about Pilates

If you’re shy and don’t really want to show your awkward first-time movements in front of strangers, you don’t have to opt for the group sessions as individual sessions are available.
