Brave news anchor learns of husband's sudden death on LIVE TV, stays calm

What's commendable is that she continued reading the news until the bulletin got over after about 10 minutes!

Being a journalist I can say that we report so much about death, accidents and other horrific incidents in India and around the world that somewhere down the line, they become an everyday affair for us and we are even unfazed by the magnitude of the incident.

But you never imagine that sometimes the news that you are reporting or writing about involves your near and dear ones. Yes, that’s what happened with a news anchor from Chhattisgarh who came to know about her husband’s death during a Live news broadcast!

But what’s commendable is that she didn’t stop doing her job and continued reporting the news even though she knew that her husband had died on the spot.

How did the event unfold?

It was a normal day at work for Raipur TV news anchor Supreet Kaur. She was reading the morning news on her channel when suddenly there was a breaking story about an accident that had killed three men and injured two others. As the reporter was speaking to her on the phone she realized that one of the men was her husband, Harshad Kawade.

“For a moment her voice trembled, but she collected herself and carried on reading the news till the bulletin got over 10 minutes later,” Ravikant Mittal, IBC24’s editor-in-chief, said on Sunday.

Her husband had left for Pithora that day from Bhillai and the moment the reporter mentioned that the car was a Renault Duster, Kaur knew that it was her husband, but like a dedicated professional she carried on till the bulletin ended about 10 minutes later. Here is the clip of the broadcast that is breaking the internet for the last couple of days.

“It was indeed a very tough situation for her and equally difficult for us to share the news about her husband’s death when we learnt about it. She remained calm while completing the news round-up of half-an-hour. She is an extremely brave lady. We are proud of her as an anchor, but what happened today has left us in shock,” one of her colleagues at IBC24 said.

Kaur only expressed her grief once the bulletin was over and then informed her family about the tragic incident. Kaur and Kawade married last year and lived in Bhillai.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh has saluted Kaur’s strength and extraordinary courage. “I salute Supreet’s strength in dealing with her husband’s demise with extraordinary bravery and professionalism. May the departed soul rest in peace,” he said in a statement.

Dealing with death of a loved one…

Death of a loved one can be devastating but one has to embrace reality and come to terms with the hard truth. Moving on can be difficult but here are a few things that can help you deal with it.

1. Take your time: Death is a big loss, therefore, take your time to overcome grief and accept reality. Don’t suppress your emotions and let your heart mourn the loss till the time you’re at peace with yourself.

2. Be kind to yourself: Many-a-times we’re still in a period of disbelief and start blaming ourselves for the tragedy in one way or the other. Accept the fact and take your time to come to terms with it.

3. Seek support: It’s understandable that many people choose to be alone when they are bereaved, but it would be a better idea to let out your feelings and ask for support from your friends and family members, especially after the funeral and other ceremonies are over. The more you share your feelings, the better you’d feel.
