Most effective parental punishments adults remember from childhood

3 min read

How were you punished as a child? We’re sure there are some punishments that strike fear in your heart until now. Studies have shown that younger kids are more likely to get physically punished than older children.

Netizens have chimed in on which punishments were the most effective, now that they have the chance to look back on these events as adults.

Some of the most effective parental punishments

Take a look at what people all over the world say are the most effective punishments from their own childhoods:

The Sermon

Reddit users and locals are all familiar with the dreaded sermon. Part interrogation, part interview and part boring lecture, we usually end up regretting our actions because we have to sit still for hours and embarrass ourselves with what happened over and over again. Miguel, a 26-year-old trainor says, “Ang tagal ng sermon ni Papa, parang anim na oras.“

The Aliping Saguiguilid

We’ve heard of kids that have to live through days, weeks or months without television, internet or other pastimes. Some people, though, have had everything taken from them and have to earn them back through chores—just like a pre-colonial slave! “I lost everything, I had to sleep on the couch,” says Bianca, 31 years old.

The Palo

Who hasn’t been whipped in the backside? We remember parental punishments using belts, slippers, bare hands and even the dreaded kawayan (Please, parents, don’t do this). Sometimes, our parents even pulled our ears! Nap, 28 years old, says the bamboo rod really did a number on him, “Sanay ako mapalo ng tsinelas pero yung kawayan, nagtanda talaga ako.”

Fratricide

Usually employed when siblings would get into arguments and fights, this gem of parental punishments involves handing siblings knives or other sharp objects and telling them, “O, ayan, magpatayan na lang kayo.” We remember just crying for our parents to stop afterwards.

The Real Tears

Sometimes, our moms and dads would deliver a speech so guilt-inducing that even our black little hears would feel it. Jorick, an account executive, says, “Tumatama sa ‘kin pag umiiyak yung nanay ko habang nagagalit.”

How about you? What creative (and horrible) punishments did your parents think of when you were younger that really stuck with you? Tell us in the comments!
