Sleep during your pregnancy is something that most new moms tend to struggle with, and understandably so since your body drastically changes during your pregnancy.
Additionally, making sure that your baby gets good blood flow is just as important as getting comfortable. Here are some tips to help when it comes to sleep during your pregnancy:
1. Don’t sleep on your back
During pregnancy, sleeping on your back compresses a major artery that goes from your heart to your lower body. This in turn can block the blood flow going to your baby. What you need to do instead is to:
2. Sleep on your side
Sleeping on your side helps improve the blood flow going to your baby, and it’s preferable to sleep on your left side instead of your right since sleeping on your left side increases the blood flow to your placenta and to your baby.
2. Get a pregnancy pillow
A pregnancy pillow is a full length body pillow that you can wrap around your legs, your body, your arms, as well as your neck so that you can get maximum comfort and support while you’re sleeping. If getting a pregnancy pillow isn’t an option, then you can instead use a bunch of pillows to support your body while you sleep.
3. Don’t drink liquids late
If you can, try not to drink liquids at least 2 hours before you go to sleep. During your pregnancy, getting into a comfortable sleeping position can be a hassle, and waking up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and then trying to fall back asleep will cost you precious sleep. So if possible, try to lessen your liquid intake before going to sleep.
4. Cramps aren’t fun. At all.
Leg cramps will be a constant struggle during your pregnancy. To ease your cramps, you need to point your toe upwards, and slowly massage your legs so get the blood flowing to your leg.
5. Massages are awesome!
Your partner can give you a massage right before you go to sleep. A massage can help you get comfortable and relaxed so that you can get a good night’s sleep. Getting a massage would also be a good way for you and your husband to spend some quality time together.
