Man arrested for allegedly beating up and throwing a knife at his wife

Man arrested for allegedly beating up and throwing a knife at his wife

According to reports, the man got angry at his wife because of a lack of ingredients for their daughter's upcoming wedding.

According to a report, a man from Quirino in Cagayan, allegedly beat up his wife due to a lack of ingredients for their daughter's wedding celebration.

She said that he threw a knife at her

According to Ramil Dela Cruz's wife, her husband beat her up during preparations for their daughter's wedding. She shares that he got angry at her because of a lack of ingredients for the preparation, and then he hurt her. She adds that he also threw a knife at her during the incident.

However, while Dela Cruz agrees that he indeed hurt his wife, he maintains that he never threw a knife at her.

He will be charged with violating Republic Act 9262, or the Violence Against Women and Children Act. Currently, he is being detained in a local precinct.

The Violence Against Women and Children Act

In the Philippines, with the creation of the Violence Against Women and Children Act, or Republic Act 9262, violence against women, or VAW still persists. Based on the 2008 National Demographic and Health Survey conducted by the National Statistics Office, one out of five Filipino has experienced physical violence since age 15.

This is particularly alarming as in this day and age, a lot of people, both men and women, still think that women are the weaker sex. Traditional Filipino society also adds to this problem as traditionally, men are the providers, leaders, and the ones who take on the dominant roles in society. Women on the other hand, are relegated to taking care of the kids and managing the household.

This sort of harmful culture against women should be stopped. Victim blaming, catcalling, and sexual harassment against women still persist to this day because not only do a lot of these cases go unreported, but a large number of victims are ashamed about what happened, or feel that the government is unable to help them.

As parents, we need to teach our children that men and women, and members of the LGBT community, should all be equally treated with the respect that everyone deserves. We need to reinforce a culture of love, respect, and understanding so that future generations won't have problems such as violence against women to contend with.
