Every once in a while, the internet bestows us with precious gifts.
We’d like to think that, at the end of our time here on earth, there is a moment like this waiting for us.
We have Erin Solari to thank for this heartwarming clip which shows her grandfather Howard as he gently croons the classic “You’ll Never Know” to comfort his 93-year-old wife Laura while she lay on her death bed.
Though Laura is suffering from dementia, we see her mouthing the lyrics to the song as Howard lovingly touches her face.
The couple have been married for 73 years. They have nine children and 18 grandchildren.
Mere minutes after it was uploaded, the video already had 3 million views.
“I know it seems private, but my family is very proud and happy to share this love with the world. As for the feedback, all the love and support we’ve gotten, being around my grandmother, I believe it maybe it had a little bit of an impact of her feeling better,” Erin told ABC News. “She’s been able to go home and we are very appreciative of that as well.”
She describes the significance of this particular song in her Youtube caption.
“Howard (Grandpa) is singing to her their love song, the song that comforted her when he went away to fight in World War II,” she wrote on YouTube. “At family gatherings, it was not uncommon for the two of them to sing this song together, each taking a verse and serenading the other. In fact, after fifty years of marriage, they renewed their vows and performed this song as a duet for the entire family at the reception.”
When they found out that the video turned them into internet stars, Laura quipped, “I told you Howard that I’d make you famous.”
How did she celebrate their instant fame? With some ice cream, of course!
