Know what's better than a new year's resolution? A new year's intention!

Know what's better than a new year's resolution? A new year's intention!

Having a new year's resolution is great and all, but having a new year's intention is way more effective and can even last a lifetime!

Ah, new year’s resolutions. For a lot of people, a new year’s resolution is a way to make a positive change in their life, whether it’s about their health, their family, their career, etc. But setting a new year’s intention might actually be a better way to go about things!

Why a new year’s intention?

Let’s face it, new year’s resolutions rarely work. According to statistics, only about 8% of people who set new year’s resolutions actually achieve their goal. Though, it’s not always about being lazy or not being dedicated enough, since it’s really difficult to make a positive change in your life.

So, why make a new year’s intention instead of a resolution? A new year’s resolution tends to focus on the end goal, such as losing weight, being more adventurous, or being a better parent to your kids. A new year’s intention on the other hand, focuses more on being motivated, it asks us “What motivates you?”

How do I go about setting a new year’s intention?

Having a new year’s intention isn’t as easy as setting a goal and sticking to it. It requires being mindful, and asking yourself how you can be a better person not only for yourself, but also for others.

You can start by sitting comfortably, closing your eyes, and then think deeply about the things that motivate you. Be mindful of your shortcomings and think about what you can do to make up for those things. Other people think about a person that motivates them; a role model that embodies the qualities that they aspire to have.

Once you find out what motivates you, you can use that motivation in order to achieve your goals. If you have a positive quality that you think would help you, turn that into the core of your personality.

Put it into action

Now that you have your motivation, you should start putting it into action. You can start small, focus on yourself and make small positive changes, then try and shift it towards your family, your friends, your work, etc.

You’ll be surprised at how impactful a small change can be. You can compare it to dropping a small pebble in a lake, it ripples out and gets bigger and bigger.

Cheers to a more positive and well-intentioned new year for you and your family!
