VISIT: Local artists collaborate to re-launch Nayong PilipinoVISIT: Local artists collaborate to re-launch Nayong Pilipino

Families can appreciate Filipino art and culture in a fun and hands-on way at the re-launch of Nayong Pilipino at Rizal Park.

The old Nayong Pilipino which featured miniatures of the country's natural wonders has been closed since 2001. However, various local artists have been working together to re-launch Nayong Pilipino, this time a smaller park located at the Orchidarium of Rizal Park in Manila (beside the National Museum).

Although they will miss the replicas of famous Philippine landmarks, families who want to immerse in Filipino art and culture should attend #ParkfestPh. The project aims to revitalize the Nayong Pilipino park by setting up new permanent installations and sprucing up old ones to showcase different aspects of our rich culture such as folklore, native textiles, Original Pinoy Music (OPM) and even street food.

To celebrate, a weekend arts festival will be held on May 28 and 29. Guests can look forward to the following special activities and performances:

MAY 28 (SATURDAY)

  • Sunprinting (make prints using sunlights and plants) with Mansy Abesamis any time between 10am to 3pm
  • Q&A with Parkfest Artists from 1pm to 3pm
    • Abbey Sy
    • Ella Lama
    • June Digan
    • Iori Espiritu
    • Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan (organization of illustrators for children)
    • ARTitas of Manila (independent artists who like to do "tita things")
    • Mabby Camacho of Mabby Makes
    • Maikala Wire Concepts
  • Chalk Walk (add your own mark inside the park!) with Richelle Macapagal of Oceanchelle from 3pm to 4pm
  • Live band performances by Childhood Heroes, Prince Dundee, and Calein from 4pm to 7pm

MAY 29 (SUNDAY)

  • Jeepney sign painting (make your own Jeepney signs) any time between 10am to 3pm
  • Q&A with Parkfest Artists from 1pm to 3pm
    • Carl Chua
    • Jelvin Base
    • Anina Rubio
    • Geli Balcruz
    • Patrick Cabral
    • John Ed De Vera
    • Camy Cabral
    • Doodle Art Enthusiasts
  • ARTambay (an informal gathering where participants can exchange notes, ideas and techniques with other artists) with Richelle Macapagal of Oceanchelle from 3pm to 4pm
  • Live band performances by Paper Satellites, Vanessa Mendoza, Calein and Majo from 4pm to 7pm

Entrance fee is only P30 for one day or P50 for both days. All activities are free but there will also be booths where guests can buy art works and materials.

Those who will not be able to drop by over the weekend will still be able to enjoy the works of art, all of which will remain as part of the displays. The park is open from 8am til 10pm, 7 days a week.

There is also a larger Nayong Pilipino park at Clark, Pampanga which features cultural shows as well as replicas of the houses of Rizal, Mabini and Aguinaldo, Barasoain Church, a Textile Museum, and various native houses of Kalinga, Aeta and Ifugao.
