New mums know this to be true: the first few months of your baby’s life can be a wonderfully complex time when you cycle through powerful emotions that can sometimes be overwhelming.
To put their mind at ease, new mommies can reach out to family and friends for guidance and reassurance, and now with the advent of social media, new mums can also seek the help of fellow mums online who can hopefully offer some advice based on similar shared experiences.
Celebrities are not exempt from needing advice at times when they feel uncertain about what motherhood holds in store in the coming days.
Serena Williams is one of these celebrity mums.
Three months after the iconic athlete welcomed her first child with husband, Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian, she took to twitter to express some heartfelt sentiments she had about breastfeeding and weaning.
“Fellow moms: How long did you breastfeed?” tweeted Williams. “Is it weird that I get emotional when I even just think about when it’s time to stop?”
In response, her mom followers offered helpful advice. One mom recommended that Williams consider baby-led weaning.
While, another mom wrote, “I’m six months in and have no plans to stop any time soon. The bond I feel with my daughter when I’m feeding her is so special!”
The American Academy of Pediatrics advises “exclusive breastfeeding for about 6 months, followed by continued breastfeeding as complementary foods are introduced, with continuation of breastfeeding for 1 year or longer as mutually desired by mother and infant.”
But ultimately, it is both the mom and her child’s decision.
“I stopped during summer after my daughter was born – she was starting to walk. However. I would never tell you what to do,” wrote one mom in response to Williams’ query.
“Trust your instincts,” echoed another mum. While another encouraged Williams to “do what feels right.”
This is not the first time Williams sought the help of her mom followers on the social media platform.
Back in July 2017, when she was near her due date, she asked for sleeping tips while pregnant, more specifically how to turn over at night.
No matter when Williams decides to wean, she’s already on the right track simply because she obviously relishes learning how to properly care for her child and is open to the help of others to better herself as a mum!
