9 Homeschooling moms we love

Mahatma Gandhi said, "There is no school equal to a decent home and no teacher equal to a virtuous parent.”

Homeschooling, though it may not be for everyone, gives many benefits along with struggles for those who've chosen this path.

We salute these moms who have managed to make learning and growing together as a family into an enriching lifestyle.

Joy Mendoza

Joy Mendoza

The mom blogger behind the award-winning site Teach with Joy grew up as a homeschool kid, now she's a director of a homeschool program, and a homeschooling mom.

She has incorporated the Montessori method into the homeschooling style she applies to educating her kids Elijah, Edan, Titus, Tiana, and Catalina. (But only to certain grade levels.)

"Using it is very helpful techniques to introduce concepts to my kids. It’s an approach that parents can replicate very naturally at home," she says in her blog.

"I am prone to reactiveness and impatience when my heart is in the wrong place. The key is to remember why I am homeschooling, to keep sight of the goal, which is to teach my children to love God with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength.”

Mai C. Kaufman

Mai C. Kaufman

This designer and "World-schooling" mom is reinventing what it means to home school. She educates her two adorable daughters Alexa, 6, and Calista, 3, along with her husband David, as they have adventures in countries like England, Scotland, and Italy.

A quick look at her instagram account can inspire you to expand your children’s horizons as well as your own.

She said in an interview, "With homeschooling we get to focus on everything but it’s much more relaxed. The kids get to learn anytime, everywhere! And we’re not after the academics, like getting really high grades. For us, school is not solely about excelling, it’s about learning and preparing them for the real world.”

Tina Rodriguez

Tina Rodriguez

The mother of three (soon-to-be four!) considers herself truly blessed with her lovely kids Tim, 9, Rysse, 6, Anne, 2 years and 7 months, plus one more on the way early next year.

She’s the devout Catholic and award-winning mom blogger behind the blog Truly Rich Mom. Aside from being a proud home schooling mom, she is also a writer, editor and online TV host.

On why she and her husband decided to home school she says, "We want to be the primary influencers in our children's lives, and want to give them the time, freedom, space and opportunities to learn at their own pace, and to develop their God-given talents and skills. We want to grow in our relationships with one another.”

Donna Pangilinan-Simpao

She has always wanted quality education for and quality time with her children Vince, 16, Marco, 14, Raya, 12, and Gino, 10.

So when her sister explained how her kids thrived through home schooling, Donna immediately planned how she can get started educating her kids at home.

"The Bridge school was a preschool who lovingly helped me homeschool my children. Their set up was close to the homeschooling way of learning, which was God given and perfect set up as we were preparing our homeschooling wings," she shares.

"We have been with The Master's Academy for over 6 years as our Dep Ed accredited provider. The meat of homeschooling is done at home but we are thankful for all the outside support, including theAsianparent Philippines."

Mariel Uyquiengco

Mariel Uyquiengco

Aside from being a proud homeschooling mom, she is part of the team behind The Learning Basket, an online parent resource which aims to empower even the busiest moms to be their children’s best teachers.

"My husband and I decided to homeschool our daughter five years ago - and continue to decide to homeschool every year - because of the lifestyle of learning that homeschooling encourages. We love the idea that homeschooled kids have the opportunity to learn for learning's sake, as opposed to studying for quizzes and exams, or to impress others with high grades," explains Mariel on why they started homeschooling their kids.

"We learn as a family. The beauty of homeschooling is that parents learn alongside their children.”

Christine Amador

Aside from being a renowned mom blogger (she was a finalist of the Philippine Blog Awards in 2010) The Mommy Journey, Christine is also a proud homeschooling momma.

With the help of her husband of 14 years, Erwin, she homeschools their kids Kyla, 11, and Toby, 8.

"It is not just about the curriculum but it is about working together, supporting each other and being there for one another. We learn as we live and share our lives together," she says.

"Homeschooling is one of my life’s difficult choices. It is not the popular choice nor the easy choice — but I definitely know in my heart that this is what God has called our family to do for our children. It is the right choice for our family."

Frances Beldia

Frances Beldia

Aside from writing her award-winning blog, Cure for Mondays Frances is a mother of two to Cole, 13, and Attika, 4.

Her blog won a 2015 People's Choice award in the Family & Relationships category of the Bloggys.

Due to the large age gap, both of her kids follow different learning paths. Though they get to enjoy film showing and some art activities together, her son Cole has major course work and Attika has a variety of preschool-appropriate activities.

"Now that our son is 13, we decided that getting him to a more structured learning would benefit him. We are independently homeschooling, which means we create our own curriculum," she shares through her blog.

"Lesson planning in homeschooling is based on what you think your child is ready to learn, how much information your learner can take in one homeschool day, the method of teaching that works for your learners and creating lessons that will also make way for their interests."

Rosanne Unson

Rosanne Unson

As part of the team behind The Learning Basket, Rosanne believes in equipping parents to be their children's best teachers.

Even while she was still pregnant with her daughter (who is now 5 years old), Rosanne and her husband knew they didn't want to put their daughter to school at an early age and eventually realized that what they were doing was actually homeschooling.

She shares, "We wanted our daughter to have tons of time to play and enjoy her childhood. We wanted her to explore and be able to learn without the pressure of grades and exams."

The biggest benefit of homeschooling, for her, is having a front row seat to her daughter's growth and development.

"We are a very young homeschooling family and we have a long way to go. Right now, we are really just laying the foundations and enjoying learning with our daughter," she shares.

"Homeschooling has helped her develop a love for learning and an appreciation of her world beyond school requirements."

Marilen Faustino-Montenegro

Marilen Faustino-Montenegro

The renowned Interior designer/Host/blogger/model is a proud homeschooling mom. We at theAsianparent Philippines are also proud to have her on our Parenting Advisory Board.

With her loving husband, former actor/model Hans Montenegro, by her side, she homeschools her kids Santiago, 5, and Sabbie, 3.

"One of the things that I love about homeschooling is that the kids learn all through out the day when they are with you,” says Marilen in her blog.

"I enjoy homeschooling my kids and look forward to every opportunity to teach them about God and life aside from basic education subjects."

Aside from homeschooling, she conducts workshops such as 100% Whole Mom where she gives moms practical advice on how to beautify their lives.
