Ask her stories about her youth, and about how she took care of her kids when she was younger. It’s a good way of bonding with your mother-in-law, and you’ll also get an insight into her personality.
2. Speak the same language
If your mother-in-law speaks a different language, then you can try and slowly learn the language she speaks so that you can have more things to talk about. She’ll also surely appreciate the gesture.

If your mother-in-law lives in another country or lives far from you, then you can bridge the gap by mailing her photos of your family or if they’re active on social media, you can send it through there. If she’s not tech savvy, you call her and share stories about her grandkids.

Simply saying “hi” or smiling at her and asking if you can help with anything are small gestures that can make your mother-in-law feel that you care about her and that you acknowledge her part in you and your family’s life.
