According to a recent study, married couples of today are having less sex compared to married couples of before.
More married people were having sex in the 90s
Published in the journal “Archives of Sexual Behavior”, a study found that Americans who were married or lived together in 2010-2014 had sex 16 times less compared to couples back in 2000-2004.
Additionally, the study also found that Americans had sex about 9 times less in 2010-2014 compared to 1995-1999.
According to Jean M. Twenge, the study’s lead author and professor of psychology at San Diego State University, “These data show a major reversal from previous decades in terms of marriage and sex.” She adds, “In the 1990s, married people had sex more times per year than never-married people, but by the mid-2000s that reversed, with the never-married having more sex.”
Couples who were working had more sex
Twenge relates that a contributing factor might be the fact that people today generally have less sex compared to those who were born earlier.
“Despite their reputation for hooking up, millennials and the generation after them (known as iGen or Generation Z) are actually having sex less often than their parents and grandparents did when they were young. That’s partially because fewer iGen’ers and millennials have steady partners,” she shares.
Age might also have a role to play when it comes to the declining number of married people who are having sex, as people in their 20s have sex more than 80 times a year, which declines to about 60 by the time they’re 45 years old, and 20 times a year by the time they’re 65.
Surprisingly, the research found that couples who were working parents had more sex compared to couples who didn’t work as much.
