5 October 2024 — We were delighted to attend the grand unveiling of Repertory Philippines’ new home, the REP Eastwood Theater at Eastwood City Walk in Quezon City, and witness the spectacular gala performance of Jepoy and the Magic Circle. This exciting Repertory Theater for Young Audiences (RTYA) production is based on the Palanca Award-winning short story, The Magic Circle by the legendary Gilda Cordero Fernando.
Directed by the esteemed Joy Virata, the interactive fantasy musical introduces young audiences to beloved Filipino folklore through an enchanting cast of characters, including tikbalang, kapre, and engkanto, as they embark on a journey to protect their home. The show, which runs until February 2025, marks a new era for Repertory Philippines (REP) as it debuts in its new Eastwood location, and we were thrilled to be part of this exciting moment in their history.
Jepoy and the Magic Circle tells the story of Jepoy, a young boy who ventures into a magical realm when his mischievous dog, Galis, dashes into the forest. There, Jepoy encounters mythical creatures from Filipino folklore who are fighting to preserve their home, blending adventure with important themes about culture, heritage, and environmental stewardship.
The gala performance, which featured the talents of Noel Comia Jr., Elian Dominguez, and Yhuan Gatbunton alternating in the role of Jepoy, was nothing short of captivating. The dynamic cast, vibrant costumes, and exceptional puppetry brought this magical world to life, leaving both children and adults mesmerized.
Mindy Perez-Rubio, REP President & CEO, expressed her excitement over the new theater: “The opening of the REP Eastwood Theater marks a significant milestone for Repertory Philippines. We’re proud to debut this production that showcases Filipino culture and heritage, while also introducing a new generation to the magic of theater.”
For those who haven’t yet experienced this charming production, Jepoy and the Magic Circle is a must-see for families and young theatergoers alike.
