Thanksgiving pies to make at home

Pies and tarts are staple sweet treats in any Thanksgiving meal. Whether you choose to prepare a classic recipe, or add a local spin to your pies, the possibilities are endless.

Here are 10 recipes — both traditional and with a twist — of Thanksgiving pies that you can make at home.

Banoffee Pie

Banoffee Pie

Banoffee pie is made with bananas, cream and toffee on a crumbled biscuit crust.

For this copycat Starbucks Banoffee Pie recipe, make the crust out of crushed Graham crackers, slathered with a layer of chocolate.

Top the crust with toffee, then bananas, and finally, whipped cream. Drizzle with chocolate syrup for an extra dose of delicious goodness.

Pumpkin Pie

Pumpkin Pie

Pumpkin pie is another iconic Thanksgiving dessert, more commonly found in the U.S.

This recipe has an undeniable local flair though, making use of kalabasa with the special addition of the well-known local chocolate Chocnut.

Some traditional spices are also substituted with Asian flavorings, giving the traditional favorite a unique Filipino spin.

Pecan Pie

Pecan Pie

Pecan pie is a Thanksgiving classic usually served in the U.S. However, since pecans may not be readily available in Philippine supermarkets, you'll probably need to scout specialty stores for the ingredients for this dessert.

One important thing to remember when making pecan pie is that you need to let it cool and set completely before slicing. This is one dessert you should definitely make ahead.

Peanut Butter Pie

Peanut Butter Pie

Food Network stars Patrick and Gina Neely have come up with this totally sinful frozen dessert idea — Peanut Butter Pie with hot fudge sauce.

To make it, you will need a prepared chocolate cookie pie crust, which you can make yourself or buy pre-made.

Warning: You'll be throwing your diet plans out of the window with this one!

Frozen Mud Pie

Frozen Mud Pie

Cold desserts are a hit in the Philippines, given our warm weather. Frozen Mud Pie is an easy no-bake dessert made with chocolate ice cream, coffee, whipped topping and pecans over a graham cracker crust.

This is a great dessert to make even if it's not Thanksgiving. You'll need to take into account the time when you'll be serving it though, because it takes a few hours in the freezer for it to firm up.

Egg Pie

Egg Pie

Egg pie is the Filipino version of a custard pie. This delicious pastry is filled with a mixture of egg yolks, evaporated milk, sugar, vanilla and lemon juice, with beaten egg whites folded into it.

The pie is baked for about 30 minutes, until the top is golden brown. Yummy, egg-y goodness for your family and friends!

Buko Pie

Buko Pie

For a thanksgiving meal with a Filipino twist, buko pie is a great dessert option.

This baked custard pie with young coconut is made with a top and bottom crust. The filling is prepared by boiling together sugar, cornstarch, evaporated milk, coconut water, vanilla and grated coconut.

Double Crust Apple Pie

Double Crust Apple Pie

This apple pie recipe is made with assorted varieties of apples and a traditional butter crust.

Of course, any slice of apple pie will be extra delicious with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top of it... so don't forget to get a tub of ice cream to go with your pie!

Upside Down Pear Pie

Upside Down Pear Pie

Have you ever tried baking with pears? This recipe is French tarte tatin, or upside down tart inspired.

The addition of a sprinkling of dried cranberries into the filling gives it a subtle Thanksgiving touch.

Peanut Boat Tart or Tartlet

Peanut Boat Tart or Tartlet

Boat tarts and tartlets make great desserts and snacks. You can even wrap these up in colorful cellophane and give them out to your dinner guests.

To make these tarts, dough is pressed into boat or tartlet molds and filled with a peanut filling. The tarts are baked until the crust is golden and the filling is firm.

Wait for the tarts to cool before removing them from the molds. This way, you'll prevent the tarts from cracking.
